Robot cars on the street in the future?

It can happen sooner than you think. DARPA's Urban Challenge in Victorville, Calif., consists of 60 miles of urban driving by robot cars. These auto-bots were able to drive unmanned over the rugged terrain.

Soon driverless cars will fill the street. The question is how soon. We already have the technology to do it. Right now robot cars can navigate complex intersections and heavy traffic, but are they ready for prime time? Only time will tell.

I'm a traffic flagger and witnessed something relating to this topic.
I stopped a car with a girl sitting in the passenger side with no one behind the steering wheel.
She had no wheel in front of her. She could have been steering with a joystick but I didn't see one. A robotic car?
I read about a company that can set your car up with this.
