People are full of nostalgia for an america that never was. It is the 1950's TV america. Take a look at the - Leave it to Beaver program. It is in glorious black and white with a solid middle class family, with no minorities or poor. They were no homeless, wheelchairs, or single mothers making the minimum wage.
Instead of reality, it is the TV monochrome version. People wish they could time travel back to a time that never was. It does exist in many 1950's time travel movies.
